REGULATIONS ON JEAN SIBELIUS COMPOSITION COMPETITION

18.-21.11.2022

Turku, Finland

 

GENERAL PROVISIONS

Organizer: the International Culture Association in Turku (Turun kansainväliset kulttuurimarkkinat yhdistys ry) in collaboration with Finnish company SEM Consulting Oy and the Union of Russian Composers.

Place and time: Nov. 18 to Nov. 21, 2021 in Martin's Church (Huovinkatu, 20810 Turku).

Competition schedule: the period for registration is from Jan. 1 to  Jun. 1, 2022.

Eligibility for participation: The participation in the International Jean Sibelius Composition Competition 2022 is open for both amateurs and professionals, for students from the educational establishments for culture and arts, from the universities for creative arts, as well as for teachers.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR CONDUCTING THE COMPETITION:

The competition shall be held in the following nominated categories:

  • instrumental music (works for solo instruments, instrumental groups, orchestras, chamber music);

  • vocal and choral music (works for voice and accompaniment instruments, for voice and ensemble, vocal ensembles, choral music with and without accompaniment);

  • electronic, electroacoustic, computer music;

  • pop and jazz music;

  • musical and theatrical performances.

 

Age groups:

  • Group 1: up to 12 years;

  • Group 2: from 13 to 16 years;

  • Group 3: students;

  • Group 4: teachers;

  • Group 5: professionals;

  • Group 6: amateurs.

 

The competition shall be held remotely, in the absence of contestants. Every contestant’s name shall be assigned an individual code. After receiving application from a contestant, he will get a registration number. The application form can be found on the website www.jsfestcompetition.com. For participation in the festival competition, it shall be required to present 2 works of different character (in different genres). The total playing time should not exceed 15 minutes (no more than 25 minutes for musical and theatrical performances). The composers who are going to take part in the competition must send to the Organizing Committee via e-mail info@semconsulting.fi the following documents:

  • a photograph of the contestant

  • a photocopy of passport or birth certificate

  • sheet music score (in PDF format)

  • audio recording of works (in MP3 format)

 

The contestant must send all the materials under the guise of his registration number.

 

Technical requirements: recorded works must be presented in separate files combined into a single folder. The folder must be named! Each file in the folder must also be named (the registration number and the name of each particular work).

 

Assessment criteria:

  • originality of idea and concept;

  • depth of topic unveiling;

  • professionalism (confident mastery of composer skills, sophistication of form, sense of style, degree of musical language complexity);

  • quality of performance.

 

JURY

The jury of Jean Sibelius Composition Competition consists of internationally recognized professional composers. The jury's task is to evaluate the contestants as objectively as possible. The jury has the right to award special prizes, to share the prizes between participants, to skip awarding any of the prizes and awards. The Jury President holds the decision-making authority in unclear situations. The jury reserves the right not to award the GRAND PRIX, if the level of performances turns out to be low. The jury's decision shall not be subject to any appeal.

 

PRIZES AWARDED AT THE CONTEST

Participants are evaluated in each nomination and age group separately: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places shall be awarded a diploma. It may be possible that some special diplomas will be granted.

 

The competition results shall be announced at the award ceremony of the JSFest Instrumental Competition on November 21th, as well as on the website www.jsfestcompetition.com on November 22th. The Organizing Committee will individually contact the participants and send them their diplomas and awards. The competitors may personally come to the award ceremony.

 

RULES FOR SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS, REGISTRATION FEE AND PARTICIPATION PAYMENT:

APPLICATIONS shall be accepted until June 1, 2022. The registration fee and the participation payment must be effected before June 5, 2022. In case when the contestants purchase from the organizers a package with accommodation and participation, a 100% payment for the package with accommodation and meals must be effected before June 10, 2021.

 

The banking details and the competitor’s personal registration number will be sent by e-mail after receiving the application. A scanned copy of confirmation of payment for application registration must be sent to e-mail address info@semconsulting.fi

 

APPLICATIONS are to be sent by e-mail to info@semconsulting.fi. The information regarding the number of participants as specified in the application shall be considered to be final.

 

Registration fee and participation payment:

Application registration: 30 €. Should the applicant cancel his participation, this amount is not refundable.

Participation payment: 120 €.

 

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION

The contestants willing to attend the award ceremony personally shall pay the costs of their travel and accommodation. The contestants may purchase a package with accommodation and meals from the organizers. Package price:

 

Standard program: 200 € in a 3-4-bed rooms, 240 € in a 2-bed room, 280 € in the single room per each person. The cost for 3 nights includes accommodation  in Scandic hotel (Eerikinkatu 30) in the city center with breakfast and dinner. Arrival 19.11. after 15.00, departure 22.11. before 12.00.
Additional night: 70 € in a 3-4-bed rooms, 90 € in a 2-bed room, 120 € in the single room per each person (with breakfast).

 

Discount program 1: only for groups of minimum of 3 persons.

160 € in a 3-4-bed rooms per each person, 210€ in double rooms per each person. The cost for 3 nights includes  accommodation in hotel Omena (Humalistonkatu 7) in the city centre, the room has a shower, toilet, TV, refrigerator, microwave oven, kettle, tea, coffee. Meals are not included.

Arrival 19.11. after 16.00, departure 22.11. before 12.00.

Additional night per person: 70€ in triple/quadruple room, meals not included, and 90€ in double rooms.

TRANSFER

The transfer (terminal - hotel - terminal) shall be guaranteed, if the organizers are notified regarding the date, time, place, train and wagon number, flight number, etc. in advance, 20 days before the start of competition. Meeting participants at Turku bus/train terminals and at Turku airport is carried out for an additional payment of 35 € per person (for a round-trip transfer). Please, kindly specify all your wishes in detail and in advance in your application.

 

From Moscow: you can get by plane or by train to Helsinki, and from there by train to Turku.

From St. Petersburg: there are daily buses to Turku, as well as trains and ferries to Helsinki.

 

GUIDED TOURS

The guided tours service shall be paid additionally.

 

Little Knight's Tour in the castle of Turku. In their free time from the festival, younger participants are offered an opportunity to make an amazing journey through the medieval castle of Turku. This tour offers young participants to plunge into the medieval life of the castle, where every boy can feel like a real knight, and every girl can become a court lady! Price: 30€ per participant.

 

Jean Sibelius Museum is located in the city centre on the banks of the Aura River.

In the museum, visitors will get acquainted with hundreds of musical instruments from across the globe. The main exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of Jean Sibelius.The building of the museum belongs to the pearls of Finnish modernism and will afford true pleasure by its architectural solution. Price: 25€ per participant.

 

Highlight sightseeing tour around the City of Turku, visiting the Cathedral Church. A fascinating bus tour through the most ancient city of Finland, Turku, where you will get acquainted with the history of the city and its main attractions, such as Turku Castle, the Cathedral and the Central Square. Free time is provided for an individual walk through the Central Square. Duration: 2 hours. Price: 40€ per participant.

 

Bus tour to the Finnish capital Helsinki. Duration: 6 to 7 hours. Price: 60€ per participant, at least 30 people on the bus.

 

A fascinating sea voyage at 8.55 p.m. on November 22 from Turku to Stockholm, coming ashore in Stockholm and travel back to Turku at 7.35 a.m. on November 24. We invite you to a fascinating trip on a VikingLine ship from Turku to Stockholm and back to Turku, one day in Stockholm with our escort. A trip in a 4-berth cabin is 100-110€ (cabins without windows) and 130-150€ (cabins with windows) per person (price depends on the deck). Lunch is charged separately!

 

RIGHTS OF ORGANIZERS

The Organizers of Jean Sibelius Composition Competition reserve the exclusive rights to radio broadcasting, video recording, television broadcasting, photographing of competition performances, as well as posting them on the website and in any other information systems without any compensation to the contestants and their pianists. 

Copyright compliance: the Organizing Committee shall not be entitled to use and distribute for own purposes the works of the festival competition participants without their consent.
